NY Soul All-Stars Encourage Us To ‘Be A Humanitarian’

It’s been months since a devastating earthquake struck Haiti in January, leaving much of the capital city of Port-au-Prince in ruins. Although the 24/7 news coverage of the catastrophe has all but stopped to a trickle, the island nation is still in dire need of help recovering and rebuilding. Deeply affected by what happened in his homeland, Haitian singer/songwriter Ricky Derose teamed up with his friend Steve Wallace to create a “We Are the World”-like project bringing together a who’s who of the New York City independent and underground soul music scene, including SoulBounce faves Eric Roberson, Angela Johnson, Chester Gregory and Darien. The result is the heartfelt composition “Be A Humanitarian,” which quite honestly puts that “We Are the World 25″ remake to shame. The aforementioned artists were joined by over a dozen featured vocalists and a choir of more than 25 others. The music video below captures the recording of the song, which has been released through a partnership with Purpose Records, Edclectic Entertainment and Neo Renaissance Music and can be purchased right now on iTunes. In addition to providing aid to Haiti, money will also be dispersed to other disaster zones, for HIV/AIDS research and to underprivileged children. The following organizations will receive 100% of the proceeds from this song: Baptist Haitian Mission; Habitat For Humanity Dekalb County, GA; Watchful Eye; Brooklyn Teen Challenge and Dr. Bob Lee’s Make The Grade Foundation. Kudos to everyone involved in this brilliant project.

Non Profits to Benefit
humanitarian group
The song ‘Humanitarian” is being released this week and the proceeds will be given to non-profits around the country.  Melody and lyrics are by Ricky Derose; the music is by Steve Wallace.

“I wrote this song after the earthquake that had taken over 200, 000 lives in my hometown Port-Au-Prince, Haiti and left the entire nation with no water, no food and most of them homeless,” said Ricky Derose.

Further conversation brought forth the fact that many of our charitable organizations are underfunded due to lack of support from persons within our communities. The song  is a call to arms for all persons to donate to charitable cause or volunteer their time with the same.

Habitat For Humanity will be a beneficiaries of the proceeds of the recording of the song “Humanitarian.”  In addition, we need support from the DeKalb County community to eliminate sub-standard housing in the county.

First Cut for 53rd Grammys

Be A Humanitarian by NY Soul All Stars Makes First Cut for 53rd Grammys

Dear Friends,

It is with great pleasure that we announce that the single “Be A Humanitarian” by The New York Soul All Stars has made the first cut in the nomination process for the Grammy Award for Best R&B Recording by Group or Duo.  While we are ecstatic about the fact we are in contention for this prestigious award we also remain singularly focused on the reason why this recording exists in the first place.< In the aftermath of the devastating earthquake in Haiti songwriter/artist/ producer Steve Wallace and Haitian born songwriter/artist Rickey Debose decided to record a song that would bring attention as well as support to the needs of the Haitian people.  In further talks with yours truly Kevin Harewood (Manager of Steve Wallace) we uncovered a few vitally important facts. They are: 1) Many charitable organizations in the Black communities are drastically underfunded. 2) Many people feel that they cannot be a part of humanitarian efforts if they are not wealthy. 3) The needs for support of the revitalization of Haiti is an ongoing effort that will require years of activity. 4) No amount of money donated to such organizations is too small, no amount of time volunteered is to little. As such  we along (with the Purpose Music Group) decided to have the proceeds for this recording benefit five key charitible organizations that are working diligently to improve our world. 1) Baptist Mission Haiti (in Port Au Prince) 2) Boys and Girls Club of Hempstead, New York 3) Watchful Eye of Brooklyn, New York 4) Habitat for Humanity Dekalb County, Georgia 5) Dr Bob Lee’s Make The Grade Foundation (New York, New York) We are very appreciative of those who join with us to help make this world a better place.  We also hope that if you don’t join with us here you do something, somewhere and “Be A Humanitarian” Regards, Kevin Harewood Your Entertainment Agency/EDclectic Entertainment New York, New York Kevin Harewood-Edclectic Entertainment
